英语中的“河流”知多少？
除我们熟悉的river和stream以外，英语中还有不少词也可以表达“河流”的意思，下面让我们看看以river和stream为代表的一组词在表示“河流”时的含义：
　　
1. river 在所有表示“河流”的词汇中，river一词是我们最熟悉的一个。它可以注入海洋、湖泊或者另外一条stream。例如：the Yangtse River 长江， the yellow river 黄河，the Amazon River 亚马逊河。此外，river可以用作比喻，表示“大量”。例如：
　　
Rivers of blood flowed during the war. 战争中血流成河。
　　
She wept a river of tears. 她流了很多泪。
　　
2. Stream 从使用范围来讲，stream的含义最广，它一方面指比river小的小溪、小河，另一方面又可以指凡是流动或流淌的东西，一连串的东西（包括思想意识等）。；例如：
　　
The stream is full of trout. 河里有很多鳟鱼。
　　
A stream of water ran off the roof. 雨水顺着房顶往下淌。
　　
The music evoked a stream of associated ideas. 这段音乐使人浮想联翩。
　　
Streams of people were coming out of the railway station. 人群从火车站涌出。

3. brook 小河，溪。通常指从源头流出的stream，多用于诗歌。例如：
　　
Sluggishly the brook flowed. 溪水缓缓地流淌。
　　
Small rivers and large brooks are both called streams. 小河和大的溪流都可以成为河流。
　　
4. creek 小河，支流。窄小且流速较慢的stream，一般比brook大。但在通俗用法中，stream,brook和creek 可以互换使用。例如：
　　
A creek winds through the woods. 一条小河从树林里蜿蜒流过。
　　
5. rill 小河，小溪。和以上的“河流”相比，它的水量最小，即细小的溪流，且一般用语诗歌。比rill 更小的还有rillet。例如：
　　
The rill is jingling on the rocks. 溪流在岩石间叮咚地流淌。
　　
6. run 小河。一般用在美国英语的方言中。例如：
　　
"Tommy, stay away form the run," the old lady shouted to her grandson. “汤米，别到小河边去。”老太太朝她孙子喊道。
　　
7. rivulet 小溪。即一条很小的brook或者stream，也可以叫做streamlet。该词由river加后缀 -let（小）构成。例如：
　　
Tadpoles can be found in this rivulet. 这条小溪里能见到蝌蚪。
　　
8. feeder 河流的支流。该词是从feed(饲养）一词演化而来，滔滔江水是由一条一条的feeder 不断地feed 的结果。
　　
9. tributary 河的支流。该词是从tribute——“从属、附庸、进贡”等意思演化而来。例如：
　　
This river collects its water supply from tens of tributaries. 这条河的水是由数十条支流汇聚而成的。
　　
10. ramification 支流，支脉。该词主要表示由许多部分组成的体系（如思想、规则等）的一部分，其次才表示河流的支流。例如：
　　
The ramification of a river 河的支流
　　
Something has gone wrong with the ramification of the railway system. 铁路的一条支线除了故障。
　　
11. freshet 指流入海中的淡水流，一条清澈的小河。由形容词fresh 变来，多用语诗歌里。
　　
12. confluence 河流的汇合处。“con-"表示“共同”，"fluence"表示“流淌”，即“流到一起来”。例如：
　　
The city was established at the confluence of the Yangtse River and the Jialing River. 这个城市建在长江和嘉陵江的汇合处。
　　
13. watercourse 天然形成或人造的水道，渠道。例如：
　　
This species of fish successfully transferred to that river through a watercourse. 这种鱼成功地通过一条水道到了那条河流。
　　
14. waterway 可航船的水路，航道。例如：
　　
Shipment was impossible at the moment since the only waterway was blocked. 当时不可能用船运输，因为唯一的一条水路被封锁了。
　　
15. ditch (明）渠，排水沟。例如：
　　
A car slipped into a ditch. 一辆车滑到了水沟里。
　　
16. cannal 运河，管。例如：
　　
the Suez Cannal 苏伊士运河， the Panama Cannal 巴拉马运河， the Grand Cannal （中国）大运河
　　
17. moat 护城河。例如：
　　
The castle was surrounded by a moat. 城堡被一条胡城河护卫着。
　　
18. Styx 冥河，即（围绕地狱的）斯蒂克斯河。在希腊神话中，冥府（Hades）里有五条河，冥河即其中之一，亡灵在此得到超度。河水有毒，能致人死地， to cross the Styx 的意思是“过鬼门关，死”，例如：
　　
The patient is waiting to cross the Styx. 这个病人已经在等死了。
